SUMMARY:PHELPS FEST SEPT 19\, 2026
DESCRIPTION:Phelps Fest Deck 08.29.26_20260731_190134_0000Download\n\n\nDetroit Musix celebrates the musical legacy born and showcased at the historical Phelps Lounge.\n \n\nThe Phelps Lounge (also known as the Phelps Cocktail Lounge) was a legendary R&B and soul music venue in Detroit’s North End. It was demolished in late May or early June 2024. Located at 9000 Oakland Avenue\, it served as a critical stop for national touring acts during the 1960s and 1970s. [1\, 2\, 3\, 4]\nHistorical Significance & Performers\nBought by music promoter Eddie Phelps in 1960 (formerly the Bizerte Jazz Bar)\, the lounge became a “mandatory stop” for soul performers. It was known for its “chic” interior\, featuring a horseshoe-shaped bar and long leather couches. [3\, 5\, 6\, 7]\n\n\n\nLegendary Acts: The venue hosted icons like James Brown\, The Temptations\, Etta James\, Little Richard\, Aretha Franklin\, and B.B. King.\nGeorge Clinton’s Transformation: In 1968\, during a 10-show run\, George Clinton famously transformed his group\, The Parliaments\, into the psychedelic-funk outfit Funkadelic at the lounge.\nFinal Performances: The club closed its doors in 1981\, with a set by B.B. King often cited as its final major show. [4\, 8\, 9\, 10\, 11]\n\n\nClosure and Demolition\nAfter closing in the early 1980s\, the building sat vacant for over 40 years\, falling into severe disrepair. Despite its historical importance and the addition of a prominent mural by artist Kobie Solomon in 2021\, the structure was eventually deemed unsalvageable and leveled in mid-2024. SUMMARY:City of Design Talk: At the Station
DESCRIPTION:Fri\, Sep 11 | \n\n\n\nThe Study @ Michigan Central \n\n\n\nBringing Architecture\, Sound\, Product Design & Community into Conversation \n\n\n\nHow do the spaces\, objects\, sounds\, and experiences around us shape the way we connect?\n\n\n\nModerated by Evan Nicole Brown\, a freelance writer for CULTURED\, the conversation will feature artist Salam Rida\, a 2025 Michigan Central x Newlab Fellow and Detroit Month of Design exhibitor; architect Jaimelyn Neher\, a key contributor to The Mezz at Michigan Central; and architect Anthony Morin of AJOM Architecture. \n\n\n\nTogether\, they’ll explore the intersection of architecture\, emerging design\, audio\, product design\, and community – considering how creative disciplines can make spaces feel more welcoming\, expressive\, and alive. Set inside Michigan Central\, the conversation reflects the spirit of the evening: a celebration of the visual and performing arts\, Detroit’s creative ecosystem\, and the power of design to shape the city’s next chapter. \n\n\n\nThe talk will begin promptly at 6:30PM\, followed by a musical performance by EDNA and sound by Bing Audio.

SUMMARY:I AM WE: The Re: Evolutionary Art of Wayne Curtis\, Emory Douglas\, and Yusuf Lateef
DESCRIPTION:The exhibition “I AM WE” brings together three artists whose practices recontextualize American history through the lens of revolutionary movements\, from the avant-garde legacy of Black midcentury abstract expressionists to the self-determination and liberatory politics of the Black Panther Party. Individually\, and collectively the works chosen for this exhibition speak from each artist’s lived experience – drawing from their unique roles as teachers\, organizers\, philosophers\, and cultural creators. Connected by a visual language that balances care\, community\, and resistance\, the work in this exhibition affirms humanity while challenging widely held assumptions of history. \n\n\n\nCurtis and Douglas bridge the Black radical tradition between their respective homes of Detroit\, MI and Oakland\, CA – two cities connected through a legacy of visionary organizing. Through Douglas’s prolific career he championed the anti-imperialist critique of the Black Panther Party whose deep understanding of symbolism through visual language forever changed the cultural lexicon of resistance. \n\n\n\nLateef and Curtis share a profound philosophy of education as a tool for liberation. They have devoted decades to teaching both in and outside of conventional educational systems – from Curtis’s Art in the Garden program at Feedom Freedom Farm and programming at the James + Grace Lee Boggs Center in Detroit\, MI to Youth Arts Alliance in Southeast Michigan\, Toledo School for the Arts\, University of Toledo\, and Radiant City Arts in Lateef’s home of Toledo\, OH.  \n\n\n\nPresented here in relation to one another\, these three artists imagine worlds that can be possible through overlapping visual languages and common values. This exhibition charges the viewer to ask themselves\, where do you find yourself in the arc of justice?
